In 2016, the appropriations available for the operating expenses of the police totalled EUR 729 million. With the appropriations of EUR 28 mil- lion transferred from the previous year, the total came to around EUR 757 million. The appropriations for operating expenses were over four million euros smaller than in 2015.
Operating income amounted to EUR 68 mil- lion, down by around EUR 13 million from the previous year. The reduction in income was mainly caused by the traf c-related licences being transferred to the Finnish Transport Safety Agency Tra and the security clearances to the Finnish Security Intelligence Service.
Personnel expenses represented the largest cost item at EUR 557 million, down by EUR 27.4 million from the previous year. The trans- fer of the Finnish Security Intelligence Service under the governance of the Ministry of the Interior was evident here.
Purchases of services accounted for EUR 111 million and rental expenses for EUR 64 million of the total expenses. The largest cost items
