The three paradoxes of leadership
One highly interesting feature emerged in the workshops and interviews. The final result was far from a clear list of strengths and weaknesses. Instead, Finnish leadership and management appeared to be characterised by three paradoxes. Finnish leadership emphasised characteristics which are strengths and weaknesses at the same time. This is not a case of an ‘either–or’ perspective where a characteristic must be considered either negative or positive. This is rather a question of being able to view these characteristics as both advantages and challenges depending on the situation. We are therefore dealing with a ‘both–and’ situation.
