Recent employment and entrepreneurship studies
finding new work and acquiring new skills. In Finland, projects part-funded by the EGF have been implemented over a period of some 10 years. This research examines EGF activities, particularly in the light of the latest Finnish EGF projects. The STX Finland Rauma, Broadcom, Software sector project, the Microsoft 1 and 2 projects and the Nokia 3 project were examined.
The situation in August 2017, was that over 80% of those who had received aid from EGF projects had found themselves a solution i.e. most of the recipients had found salaried employment and a small proportion of recip- ients were in education/training. About 18% of them were unemployed. The proportion of those who were self-employed was clearly greater than had been seen in previous EGF studies. The study examined ending unemploy- ment and finding solutions from the perspective of those who benefited from the Software sector project and from the Microsoft I and II projects. Of the EGF aid recipients who were registered as unemployed, about a third were employed directly in the following phase. A good half of
the recipients had progressed through various kinds of training, study or coaching. Only 6% of recipients has been continuously unemployed. Some of those made redundant did not register as unemployed at all, but were mostly employed directly in new jobs or during the period covered by the redundancy package. Of the recipients of EGF aid who progressed through training, study and coaching, labour market training in particular, but also coaching, were quite effec- tive in getting people employed in salaried jobs.
The recipients of EGF aid are ambivalent about the importance of TE services with regard to their own employment: for some the services had no significance, but for others they had. Most of those who have not found the services to be useful in finding employment, either did not need help or, according to the recipients, it was not available. The recipients of EGF aid who did find TE services to be important, used the services to become employed and to update their skills.
