Booming Trade in Health Technology
The United States is the largest health technology market in the world and the most
important export destination for Finnish health technology products.
Exports of Finnish health technology products to the
United States rose by 23%
in 2016. These exports
amounted to USD 930 million and accounted for 40% of the total health technology exports. The increase was spurred by the growing demand for Finnish medical and surgical devices; a subcategory that accounted for 13%
of the total Finnish exports to the United States in 2016.
Finland has innovative solutions to offer in health technologies, wearables, wellbeing, digitalization, and genomics.
For Finland, the United States
is an important source of health technology imports. In 2016, the United States was the main source of imports of medical diagnosis and X-ray devices to Finland.

DIGITALIZATION — CHANGING THE DENTAL INDUSTRY
Planmeca Oy is the largest Finnish company in
the field of dental equipment and the third largest manufacturer in the world. The company’s products are distributed in over 120 countries worldwide and the product range covers everything needed at a dental clinic — from digital dental units to CAD/CAM solutions, 2D and 3D imaging devices, and software.
Planmeca USA Inc., established in the 1980s, is headquartered in Roselle, Illinois. The company’s customers in North America vary from private and group dental practices to governmental institutions and universities. Planmeca has, among others, worked together with the United States military, providing dental X-ray equipment for the military’s needs. U.S. military bases have been digitalizing their dental practices and Planmeca has been a big part of this transition. Planmeca also works closely with universities. One example of this cooperation is the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore, which is equipped with Planmeca’s dental units, imaging devices, and software.
