BIOECONOMY — FINNISH EXPERTISE IN FUTURE GROWTH AREAS
The bioeconomy is an economy that utilizes renewable biological resources and turns them into food, energy, and other products and services. It is characterized by the use of clean technologies. The bioeconomy sector offers vast and long-lasting growth prospects.
Finland offers an exceptional platform for bio-based production and partnering. Finland’s expertise in the bioeconomy is consolidated in a solid industry cluster, several bioeconomy value chains, world-leading know-how and technologies, and favorable public policies. The bioeconomy ecosystem brings together Finnish academic institutions and businesses in the forest, water, energy, chemistry, and food sectors. The current value of the projects, both in operation and under planning, is nearly USD 5 billion.
Finland is committed to doubling the current turnover of the bioeconomy sector to USD 120 billion, and to adding 100,000 new jobs by 2030. To achieve these goals the Government has earmarked funding for the development of bioeconomy industries, with support for research, pilot projects, and investment.
