FINNISH COMPANIES ARE INVESTING IN THE UNITED STATES
Nokia completed the acquisition of Alcatel–Lucent in 2016 in a transaction valued at USD 16.6 billion. The combined entity has particular strength and scale in the United States and is a global leader in mobile and fixed network infrastructure. Nokia employs 13,500 people in the United States.
Konecranes acquired Terex Corporation’s Material Handling and Port Solutions business in 2017 for
USD 1.3 billion. The acquisition further solidifies Konecranes leadership role in the port solutions market. Konecranes employs 3,300 people in Region America.
Wärtsilä signed a 12-year and USD 1 billion maintenance contract with the American cruise giant Carnival. Wärtsilä is a global leader in advanced technologies and complete lifecycle solutions for the maritime and energy markets. The company employs nearly 800 people in the United States.
Huhtamaki has invested over USD 380 million in the United States since 2011. Huhtamaki is a global specialist in packaging for food and drink. The company’s most recent investment in a new manufacturing and distribution unit will create jobs for hundreds of Americans in Goodyear, Arizona. Huhtamaki employs 3,900 people in the United States.
Nokian Tyres, a company specializing in the production of car tires, is investing USD 360 million in the establishment of a new facility and distribution center in Daytona, Tennessee. The production is scheduled to begin in 2020 and it will create an estimated 400 jobs.
Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation are strengthening their existing partnership and joint continuous improvement efforts to maintain cruise ship safety and reliability.
KONE is a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry; it employs 5,200 people in the United States. In 2016, the company opened a new facility with an R&D department in Allen, Texas.
