As regards vehicles acquired from another EU country see also chapter 3.9.2 (exemption from the local VAT).
5.1.2 Vehicle Inspection
The vehicle inspection of motor vehicles purchased from an import business is taken care of by the import business.
Other vehicles imported to Finland need a registration inspection before CD or C registration of the vehicle. Several companies in the Metropolitan Area offer inspection services. The inspection service will give advice on the required documents and roadworthiness requirements.
The inspection service issues a registration certificate of the vehicle which is needed for the CD and C registration (both the technical section/tekninen osa and the notification section/ilmoitusosa).
The first annual inspection must be carried out within three years from the date the vehicle was taken into use. This is followed by an inspection-free year, after which the vehicle must be inspected annually.
More information on vehicle inspections may be obtained from the Finnish Transport Safety Agency or from the inspection stations.
5.1.3 Third-Party Motor Insurance
Third-party motor insurance is mandatory in Finland. A third-party motor insurance may be taken with one of the Finnish insurance companies engaged in traffic insurance. An all-risk insurance (KASKO) is also recommended.
